SOLID WASTE

Wyandotte City Council adopted Ordinance #1389 which requires a metal, durable plastic, or approved container of equal material to be used for the collection of solid waste. The Ordinance takes effect FEBRUARY 1, 2014. PLASTIC BAGS WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTED AS A CONTAINER FOR TRASH. Plastic bags may be placed inside your container. With the exception of toters leased from the City, containers must be 32 gallons or less and have a water tight, fly-proof and odor-proof cover.

There is a maximum weight limit of sixty (60) pounds for the container. Containers that do not meet these requirements will not be collected. Containers shall not be placed for collection before 6:00 p.m. of the day preceding the day scheduled for collection, but no later than 5:00 am on your collection day and all empty containers shall be removed no later than 8:00 pm of the day following collection.

  • Use of large, bulky containers over 32-gallons in size for solid waste can cause serious injuries to sanitation workers including wrist sprains and back injuries.
  • Collection workers lift between 800 and 1,000 containers per day. Although these larger cans are easy to drag/roll to the curb, it is very difficult to lift four feet off the ground to dump in the collection vehicle.
  • Studies have shown that injuries decreased by over 50% with these limits.

Please assist us in creating a safer working environment and do not use containers over 32-gallons at the curb.

If you have a large container you would like to dispose of, please place a sign on the container saying, “THROW CAN AWAY”.
