A
Walk with Gwen Frostic By Jennifer Morrison
Many people are familiar with Gwen
Frostic through her beloved nature prints though not many people know
the remarkable story of her life. Frostic ended her life an artist and
successful entrepreneur. She began it with such a profound physical
handicap that teachers predicted she would never be able to write her
own name. How Gwen went from being a handicapped child in a world with
few expectations of her to a woman of many accomplishments is an amazing
story involving art, attitude and a red-winged blackbird. Guest
Speaker, Jennifer Morrison Ms. Morrison has been working for
eight years at the Grand Rapids Public Library in their History and
Special Collection Center. Her and her husband, John, own After Word
Professional Historians LLC, a service that helps people preserve their
life stories in audio and print. However, it was when she served as the
curator of the Greater Benzie Historical Museum that she knew and
interviewed Gwen. She has pleased at least fifteen audiences with her
slide presentation “A Walk with Gwen Frostic”.
Gwen’s
Family
We are pleased to announce that
several Frostics are planning to attend the celebration, including
Gwen’s only surviving sibling, Margaret Schweitzer of Maryland, Fred and
Dianne Frostic of Virginia and Bill Frostic of Beulah, Michigan. Still
living downriver are Janet (Frostic) Cashin and John Frostic. Bill,
mentioned above, is the nephew who worked with Gwen in the Benzonia shop
for over 35 years. He has given the Commission permission to use one of
his aunt’s prints in our literature. He is also planning to loan our
museum some artifacts and photographs to display. We appreciate his
interest and kindness.
We look
forward to meeting these special guests!
