RECREATION SUPERINTENDENT
RECREATION SUPERINTENDENT
General Statement of Duties:
Primarily directs the City’s recreation program; does related work as
required. Employee should also be prepared to reorganize the department
to integrate additional City services as necessary.
Distinguishing Features of the Class: The employee in this
class is responsible for the general administration, development,
marketing and direction of the year round recreation program for all
groups, ages and interest levels within the City and for the necessary
physical facilities to make programs effective. The employee functions
with a wide latitude of technical and administrative discretion within the
framework of broad policies established by the Wyandotte Recreation
Commission.
Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only)

Plans and directs and expanding, flexible program of
recreational activities for all segments, groups, ages and interest
levels of the City;

Allocates and supervises the work of the staff;
·
Provides programs of training for staff members;
·
Performs planning and research studies of local conditions
affecting recreation and develops long-range programs to meet these
needs;
·
Directs the acquisition, design, construction and
operation of recreation facilities and areas under control of the
department;
·
Develops, supports, controls and administers the budget
for the department;
·
Interprets the program through press releases and other
publicity, through representation on interagency councils and committees
and community addresses, and through the organization and encouragement
of neighborhood councils and other interested groups;
·
Prepares or directs the preparation of departmental
records and periodic and special reports;
·
Pursues funding for programs through grants, donations,
and sponsorship;
·
Conducts recreational activities on occasion as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Employee should be
well-versed in broad management skills including marketing, personnel
management, organizational behavior and structure, and financial
management. Comprehensive knowledge of all phases of City recreational
work and its administration; thorough knowledge of the principals and
methods of park and playground planning and development; ability to
develop and execute a well-rounded program of recreational activities;
ability to cooperate with and interpret recreational philosophies to City
authorities, public and private groups and agencies and to the general
public; ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with
subordinates and to promote and maintain high morale and enthusiasm; good
judgment; good physical condition. Ability to identify and acquire
funding for City programs through various methods.
Requirements:

Bachelors Degree in related field required
·
Certification from the Michigan Recreation and Parks
Association (preferred)
·
5 years of experience in management position or recreation
management (preferred)
