A permit is required if a roof is stripped.
Two layers of shingles maximum. If just reshingling, a permit is
not required.
If a roof is stripped, an inspection of the roof deck is required
before putting down underlayment (felt paper) A final inspection
is required when the job is complete.
The underlayment (#15 lb. felt paper) shall be laid parallel to
the eaves.
An approved ice guard/shield is required and shall extend from the
eaves edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the interior wall
line of the building. Not required for unheated garages, porches
or sheds.
YOU CANNOT SHINGLE OVER SHAKE SHINGLES.
THEY MUST BE REMOVED.
Asbestos-cement shingles shall not be installed on roof slopes
below 4:12 pitch.
Asphalt shingles shall not be installed on roof slopes below 2:12
pitch. For any pitch below 4:12 a double underlayment of #15 lb.
felt is required.
Asphalt roll roofing installed on a roof having a pitch of 3:12 or
less must be laid parallel to the eaves. Asphalt roll roofing
shall not be installed on roofs having less than a 1:12 pitch.
Step flashing is required at wall and roof intersections and
chimneys.
Drip edge is required at eaves and recommended along the rake.
Proper ventilation of the attic space is required, consisting of,
but not limited to, roof vents, ridge vents, and soffit vents, one
(1) square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of
foundation, if located in the upper portion of roof. This may be
reduced to one (1) square foot of ventilation for every 300 square
feet of foundation area, if one-half of the vents are located
within three (3) feet of the eaves and one-half are located at top
to produce cross ventilation.
Commercial flat roofs do not require a permit or inspection.
Twenty-four (24) hour notice required for inspections.
