November 10th
2005 marks the 30th anniversary of the Edmund
Fitzgerald sinking. There have been
many ships that have gone down, but
people remember the ‘Fitz". Perhaps it’s the
haunting song by Gordon Lightfoot. On November 9th
of that year the Fitzgerald left from Superior, Wisconsin on
its last voyage to Zug Island.
She was
launched in 1958 and was 729 feet long, the biggest freighter
to be built at that time. She could even make an ocean voyage
but was never needed to do so. Lake Superior is the world’s
largest fresh water lake in the world. The lake surface covers
31,700 square miles; the deepest part is 1,332 feet.
The Fitzgerald sailed the Great Lakes
for 17 years and was deemed "unsinkable"
by experts. She took with her 29 men.

At Biddle Gallery in
Wyandotte, Reverend Bruce Campbell will lead a special prayer
service. Bob Boonenberg will sing" The Wreck of the Edmund
Fitzgerald" The 29 names of the men who where lost will be
read and a bell will toll after each name. Leo will talk about
that tragic night.
